When arriving to Scotland from Germany, to study for my semester abroad at the University of Dundee, I had never even been in a rowing boat and had no intention to pick up the sport. But little did I know that would all change when I strolled past the desk of Dundee University Boat Club at the Sports Union’s fair during Freshers week. At the time, I did not realise how much this chance encounter would shape the time spent in my new home away from home. In joining the club with the intention to have a nice weekend activity, I came to enjoy it so much that I rarely missed a training session. Before I knew it, I found myself in the coxed beginner’s four, for the first race of the semester in Aberdeen.

I remember talking to the Men’s Captain, asking him if it was even worthwhile aiming for the races, because I would leave Dundee in December. When he assured me that being in the club...

Welcome to the 2018/19 season DUBC! How is it already September!? Before we know it the Head Race season will be upon us? I hope the summer break has given all of our members a chance to relax, recuperate, and enjoyed spending time with their families and friends.

We have a busy year ahead, with the baton being passed to us from last year’s committee, after becoming club of the year for 2017/18. As a relatively small, fully self-funded student club we are itching to get going, and get growing. Having rebranded our club over the summer (if you haven’t read about it... check it out here) we are excited to expand on the great work that has been going on for the last few years. The Equipment team has worked tirelessly to get the Boat House at Inchyra in tip top condition, with new blade designs pained on and boats safely retrieved from essential repairs, we are ready for an in...

For the 2017/2018 season, the year of hard work had started early, even before the end of summer. A fresh-faced committee were voted in and with a lot of new members taking up the roles of responsibility, there was a massive learning curve needed for it to be successful. However the huge enthusiasm shown by each member made it clear from the very beginning that this year would be our most successful yet. From the get-go, this new committee found a common goal; to ensure the previous years of effort from countless dedicated Alumni, were all worthwhile through establishing DUBC as one of, if not the best, sports club in Dundee.

When September landed, we had our returning members back to training through Warm Up Week, which was followed by our 'Give-it-a-Go' sessions, with record numbers of new members turning up to see what rowing at Dundee could offer the...

For Dundee University Boat Club, the 2017/2018 season has become one of the club’s greatest years, both on and off the water, and in all aspects of the club. Our tally of wins has been greater than recent years combined, the number of active members keen to push themselves during all training sessions has significantly increased and inadvertently, the club has bonded to become more tight knit than ever. Something that, through the dedication and compassion of all of our hardworking members, has become the defining characteristic of the club. Between gruelling winter training sessions, and cold early morning starts on the water, it’s something that’s very valued in any university sports club – the importance of having people to turn to, for relief when you’re struggling between deadlines, needing a distraction from the pressures of work and study, or just simply having a bad day...
